Brant Mental Health Solutions presents

Understanding Grief and the Parent of a Child with an Addiction

Harmful substances can have devastating effects on the user.  When someone is engaged with a battle of substance it can be seen as a personal experience however we often overlook how other people are directly impacted.  How addiction affects other members of the family, especially the parents (and stepparents) who witness the struggle and feel helpless from the sidelines.

Parents can experience a wide-range of emotions including; love, anger, confusion, and perhaps a loss of control.  They can also experience a change in their sleeping habits, their appetite, as they ride a rollercoaster of emotions.

Watching the emotional damage from substance usage, coupled with the financial, legal, and medical challenges can leave a parent feeling helplessness.  There is a real possibility the family is grieving the loss of what they wished had been different.  The loss of a dream and the absence of having the opportunity to say what needs to be said, knowing they have been heard.

If this message resonates with you join Tammy Adams for a short presentation on how families may be experiencing grief as their child struggles with addiction.  Learn how we have been taught to ignore these emotions and that there is hope for a different tomorrow.  We cannot change the experiences of another but do have 100% control of our emotions and how we react.  In most cases we have never been taught how to process these feelings.

Self-care is so important, and it is even more important when a loved one is addicted and you feel there is nothing you can do to support them.
