What Teachers Commonly Bring to Therapy
As we begin another school year, we wanted to share some of the most commonly identified concerns and challenges raised by teachers as they seek mental health support. These themes reflect the pressures educators are navigating both inside and outside the classroom, and highlight the importance of creating space for teachers to access support, build resilience, and prioritize their own well-being.
Struggling to Relax
For many teachers, the school year doesn’t end when the final bell rings. Even once summer arrives, it can be difficult to slow down, switch off, and truly relax.
Work-Life Balance
Teachers often struggle to create a healthy boundary between work and personal life. When work takes up evenings, weekends, and mental space, it can feel difficult to be fully present outside the classroom.
An Unmanageable Workload
Planning, marking, meetings, administrative demands, and the emotional labour of teaching can quickly become overwhelming. Many teachers describe feeling like there is always more to do and never enough time to do it.
Being Present with Students
Teachers want to be engaged and present with their students, but exhaustion and stress can make this challenging. The pressure to meet the needs of every student can leave teachers feeling emotionally stretched.
Rising Mental Health and Behavioural Needs
Teachers are increasingly navigating complex mental health and behavioural concerns in the classroom. Supporting students through these challenges can be rewarding, but it can also carry a significant emotional weight.
Burnout
Over time, the combination of workload, stress, and emotional demands can lead to burnout. Teachers may find themselves feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, detached, or simply no longer enjoying a profession they once loved.
Final Thoughts:
Therapy can provide teachers with a space to process these experiences, set healthier boundaries, and prioritize their own well-being alongside the needs of their students.
Our team has presented to teachers and staff within schools to help not only manage challenging situations, but also build awareness, strengthen understanding, and provide practical strategies to better support staff and students and promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
